ONE FOR THE ROAD
The show is essentially a showcase for the talents of Andrew Kay. Most of the songs are written by him, barring his interpretation of a smattering of golden oldies and standards, all of which he does in his own inimitable style. There are also various pieces for solo guitar, including a virtuoso piece called Rylynn , by Andy Mckee that Andrew performs from time to time. Andrew includes storytelling and embraces the South Africa we see before us, and reflects on it. The show is partly satirical, especially in the lighthearted songs, but the message is serious and concerns the necessity for South Africans to continue to strive towards a common identity, and to release the hold that gender, race, class, religion and language have held over us in the past.
However, the main thrust of the show is the music. With minimalist aides such as lighting, the main core of the show concerns a performance in toto of the songs on the new album, One For The Road. Andrew also includes live favourites from his previous albums Peace and Love and Sweet Like A Lemon, as well as brand-new material he has written this year. For Andrew it's all about connecting with the audience, which his latest material has proven he is able to do over and over again. In 2002 he won the National Emerging Sounds songwriters' competition, and is fulfilling the promise the judges showed in his work. Come and listen to his songs, and I'm sure you'll agree!
